About Yala

Over a 1000 kilometers south of Bangkok, one finds the country's southernmost province of Yala. The name Yala comes from the older word Yalor which means fishing nets. The province, which completely lacks a coast and large-scale fishing, has instead got its name from the area's mountains, which looks similar to a fishing net. In addition to the mountains consists the landscape of flat lowland with large rubber tree plantations.

As in many of the other southernmost provinces is a big part of Yalas population muslims. This has given the province's food and works a multicultural character. In addition to the mixed-ethnicity thai / malay you find the indigenous Sakai people south of the city. The Sakai people, lives today in their own villages where the main income is mainly from rice and rubber plantations. In order to travel to the neighboring country of Malaysia, a visitor can choose to cross the border just over 100 kilometers south of the city. The border Betong and its nearby area is known for its beautiful mountains and exquisite dishes.
