About Samut Sakhon

Barely thirty kilometers west of Bangkok is the little coastal province of Samut Sakhon. Port city, which has a long tradition of fishing and trade, often called the Tha Chin. Probably because of the extensive trade happened with Chinese vessels. Tha Chin is also the name of the river that flows through the province. River leads to Siam bay and at its eastern shore bank was established in 1548 the military recruitment center Sakhon Buri.

In 1704 were the city and the river through the canal dug Khlong Mahachai. The city changed the governors also the name of Mahachai, which is among the local population today is an established concept. Rama the Fourth Amended finally named to the Samut Sakhon.

The province still today serves as a center for fishing and trade marked, not least on Mahachai's market. Although the market's assortment of fresh fish and shellfish is considered a country's largest, is here also plenty of handicraft products of good quality. Left coast and its fishing culture can be found further inland a large number of fruit and flower plantations, which acts as a secondary source of income populations.

Wichian Chodok fort was built by Rama the third in 1827. The aim was to defend itself against a possible invasion from the sea. Today, the ruins of the fort remain in place while the cannons are moved to the city for exhibition.

Birding at Ratsatthakayara temple offers a very large number of birds of different species that live naturally in the Temple neighborhood. The area between the rivers Mae Klong and Tha Chin attracts besides birds also a large number of bird interested people.
